Grade 8 Social Outreach

2022-23

The Social Outreach Programme involves hands-on experience within the community so that our students not only excel in academics, but also contribute to the community. As part of this approach, the students of Grade 8 visited Dream Grove, a community farm at D’Monte Road, Bandra West on 6th October, 2022.

What was once a dry barren land has been transformed into a sustainable ecosystem where the soil has been made fertile through natural composting methods through the initiative of local residents.

Our students were asked to observe things that piqued their curiosity at the farm, choose them and then explain why they chose those specific things. Some picked leaves, while others chose insects. Through the activity, the students learned how everything within an ecosystem has its own part to play, how every organism and object is interconnected for the well-being of the other.

The students were informed about the history of the place. How the residents of the area came together to transform the dry unused land, into a place teeming with flora and fauna! Most residents volunteer at the farm- ploughing, digging, planting and harvesting the many fruits and vegetables grown there.

Groups of students were taken around the place for a more hands-on activity. Some of our students were given farm tools and tried their hand at digging the earth. Others were taken around and asked to identify the plants and their properties around the place.

Through the outreach, the students learned how they could come together and do something to maintain the ecological balance in nature, especially when we are facing the negative effects of climate change. Apart from this, they also learned various farming techniques that they could use to maintain their own garden.

The outreach concluded with the students thanking the organisers for enlightening them about such a wonderful place and clicking some pictures for memory!
