International Yoga Day

The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on 21June since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and with nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in our wellbeing. Let us work towards adopting this practice as an important part of our daily routine.

Yoga means union of our body, mind, wisdom and intellect. It is done with the complete involvement of the mind bearing different feelings /attitudes /inclination of our thinking called “Bhava” in Sanskrit.

Here is a video demonstrating a Yoga posture to elaborate the same.

‘Yoga Mudra Asana’ is posture that is done sitting with crossed legs in a comfortable meditative posture e.g., Sukhasana, Padmasana or Ardhapadmasna

Sit with your spine upright, chin parallel to the ground, ears in line of the shoulders that are thrown back. Hands on your back holding the wrist of one hand with the other, with the awareness that you are the only one responsible for taking care of your body.  This is an instrument given to you only once to fulfil your goal in this life.

With eyes closed, breathing normally, be aware of the painful and comfort points in your body. Concentrate on the left and right side balance of your body.

Now take a deep breath and while exhaling slowly bend forwards towards your left knee with the feeling to let go of all the negativity stored in our mind (hatred, jealousy, anger) and all that is bad giving you a complete feeling of surrender.

Come up slowly inhaling with the feeling of having won over all the negative thoughts. A true feeling of Triumphant. Repeat the same on right side and then regain your posture towards the centre.
